Banner history

See the last five saved versions of a campaign banner, preview any of them, put an earlier one back, or delete one you no longer need, and which versions Footer365 keeps as a record of what your email carried.

Every time you save a campaign with a changed banner, Footer365 keeps the banner as a version. If a change goes wrong, you can look back at earlier banners and put one back.

How versions work

  • A changed banner is a version. Selecting Save adds a new version when the banner's design has changed, and makes it the current one, which is the banner your email carries. For a running or paused campaign, Save draft keeps the change as a draft instead, and the version is added when it is published. See Drafts, publishing and approval. A save that changes only the campaign's name, schedule, target rules, status or analytics tagging adds no version.
  • Five are listed. The history lists the banner's five most recent versions. When you save a sixth, the oldest leaves the list automatically. It is deleted, unless emails were sent with it: see "Versions that went out in email" below.
  • Banner A and banner B are separate. During an A/B test, banner B keeps its own five versions. Starting a test makes banner B's first version, a copy of banner A. When a test ends with banner B kept, banner B becomes a new version of the campaign's banner.

Open the history

  1. Open the campaign.
  2. Select History in the top bar. The number beside it is how many versions are listed.

The Banner history panel slides in from the right. On banner B's page it is Banner B history. The newest version is at the top and is always v1, and the numbers count back from there to the oldest. When a version is deleted, the ones after it move up to close the gap. Each version shows its number, when it was saved (in your own time zone) and by whom, how it came about where that is not an ordinary save, and Current against the version being sent.

Preview a version

Click anywhere on a version (not on its buttons) to see the banner in a preview window.

Restore an earlier version

  1. In the history, find the version you want.
  2. Select Restore. The campaign reopens with that version on the canvas, and a note at the top says which version it is.
  3. Check it, and select Save to put it back. To leave the banner as it is, select the back arrow at the left of the top bar instead.

Nothing changes until you save. Saving puts the banner back the way any save does: its links are checked with Google Web Risk first, and its image is drawn again. See Tracked links and safety checks. The save adds a new version, which becomes v1, with the note Restored from the version saved on and the date and time of the version you restored. The note names the date rather than a number because every number moves on by one with each save. The version you replaced is still in the history.

Delete a version

  1. Select Delete on the version.
  2. The Delete version window asks you to confirm. Select Delete.

The version leaves the history and cannot be restored. The current version is the one being sent, so it cannot be deleted. Its Delete button is greyed out.

Versions that went out in email

Footer365 keeps a record of which version of a banner went out with each email, so it can show what an email carried if that is ever questioned (Customer Agreement 9.6A). A version that went out with at least one email is therefore never deleted, whether it drops off the end of the list, you delete it, or you delete the whole campaign: it is taken out of your history and kept out of sight, with the images it uses. You cannot see or restore it in the portal. It is deleted with your account, as described in the data retention policy.

Good to know

  • A copy starts fresh. A duplicated campaign, and a campaign restored from a backup, each start with a single version.
  • Settings are not versioned. Changes to a campaign's name, schedule, target rules, status and analytics tagging are recorded with their values before and after in your audit log, as is each banner version saved.
